Product Description

CM 140 Screw Capping Machine Food Beverages and Cosmetics Cap Capping Machine Glass Plastic Bottle With Cap Feender Elevator

The Cap Delivery Challenge

In an automatic capping line, caps must arrive at the capping head at precisely the right moment, in exactly the right orientation, and at a rate that matches the line speed. This seems straightforward — until you consider the diversity of cap geometries that a modern packaging line must handle. A 28mm beverage cap is one thing. A trigger sprayer with a 250mm dip tube is quite another. A pump dispenser with a spring-loaded actuator, a child-resistant cap with a locking ring, a flip-top cap with a directional hinge — each presents unique feeding challenges.

The CM140's cap elevator feeding system is engineered to handle this diversity. The bulk-hopper elevator reliably lifts caps from a floor-level bin to the elevated cap track, regardless of cap size or weight. From there, the custom-fabricated SS304 cap track — designed specifically for your cap geometry — guides each cap to the capping head pickup point in perfect orientation.

How the Cap Elevator Works

The cap elevator is a floor-standing unit positioned adjacent to the CM140 mainframe. It consists of:

Bulk Hopper: A large-capacity stainless steel hopper at floor level holds thousands of caps (exact capacity depends on cap size — typically 2,000-5,000 caps for standard sizes). The hopper is designed for easy refilling from bulk cap bags or boxes without stopping the machine.

Cleated Conveyor Belt: A motor-driven belt with evenly spaced rubber or plastic cleats runs from the bottom of the hopper upward at approximately a 90-degree angle. As the belt moves, cleats pass through the bulk cap mass at the bottom of the hopper, each cleat picking up one or more caps.

Sorting Zone: As caps travel upward on the cleated belt, incorrectly oriented caps fall back into the hopper under gravity. The cleat design and belt angle are optimized so that only caps riding in the correct orientation reach the top of the elevator.

Discharge Chute: At the top of the elevator, correctly oriented caps slide off the belt onto the SS304 cap track — a gravity-fed rail system that guides caps toward the capping head pickup point.

Level Sensor: A photoelectric sensor at the top of the elevator detects when the discharge chute is full and pauses the elevator motor. When caps are consumed by the capping head, the chute clears and the elevator restarts automatically. This maintains a consistent buffer of caps on the track without overfeeding.

Advantages of the Cap Elevator:

  • Large bulk capacity minimizes operator refill frequency — refill once per shift or less for most applications
  • Robust mechanical design tolerates dusty or industrial environments
  • Handles heavy, large-diameter caps (up to 100mm) that vibrating disks struggle with
  • Simple maintenance — belt and cleat replacement are straightforward
  • Lower cost than vibrating disk for large-cap applications
The Custom SS304 Cap Track

The cap track — the guided path from the elevator discharge to the capping head pickup point — is not an off-the-shelf component. It is custom-fabricated for your specific cap geometry:

Guide Rails: Two parallel SS304 stainless steel rods set at a precise spacing that allows the cap body to slide smoothly while supporting the cap flange. For trigger sprayers and pump dispensers, the guide rails include a center channel that accommodates the extended dip tube.

Track Angle: The track is set at a specific downward angle — steep enough for reliable gravity feed, shallow enough to prevent caps from accelerating and jamming at the pickup gate.

Anti-Static Treatment: For plastic caps in dry environments (common in winter or air-conditioned facilities), static electricity can cause caps to cling to the track rather than sliding freely. Anti-static treatments and grounding are available.

Quick-Release Mounts: The track assembly mounts to the CM140 frame with quick-release clamps, enabling rapid removal for cleaning, product changeover, or track swap.

Vibrating Disk Feeder Option

For applications where the cap elevator is not the optimal solution, the CM140 can be equipped with a vibrating disk (vibratory bowl) feeder instead:

Better for:

  • Small caps (below ~30mm diameter) that may not seat reliably in elevator cleats
  • Caps requiring precise rotational orientation (directional dispensing caps, flip-tops with a specific hinge orientation)
  • Lower-volume production lines where the elevator's bulk capacity is unnecessary
  • Caps with delicate decorative finishes that may experience cosmetic wear from elevator hopper recirculation

Limitations vs. elevator:

  • Smaller hopper capacity — requires more frequent operator refilling
  • Sensitive to environmental vibration — nearby heavy machinery can disrupt feed consistency
  • Less suitable for heavy, large-diameter caps
  • Higher cost than elevator for large-cap applications

Product FAQ

Q: How many caps does the elevator hopper hold?

A: Approximate capacities: 28mm beverage caps ~5,000 pieces, 45mm trigger sprayer caps ~2,500 pieces, 100mm jar lids ~1,000 pieces. Exact capacity depends on your specific cap dimensions. For high-volume lines, an extended hopper is available that approximately doubles these capacities.

Q: How long does it take to change the cap track for a different cap type?

A: The cap track assembly removes via four quick-release clamps — approximately 2 minutes to remove. Installing the alternate cap track takes another 2 minutes. If the elevator cleats also need to be changed (unusual — typically only needed when switching between substantially different cap diameters), add 5-10 minutes. Total cap track swap: 5-15 minutes.

Q: Can the elevator handle caps that are slightly wet or dusty?

A: Slightly dusty caps are generally not a problem — the elevator's robust mechanical design is tolerant of light dust. Wet caps can be problematic: moisture reduces friction between the cap and cleats, potentially causing caps to slip and not reach the top of the elevator. Caps should ideally be dry when loaded. If your process produces wet caps, we recommend a cap drying station before the elevator.

Company FAQ

Q: What information do you need to design the cap track for our product?

A: We need: 20-50 cap samples for measurement and testing, cap material (PP, PE, metal, etc.), cap diameter and height, any special features (dip tube length for trigger sprayers, directional spout, hinge location for flip-tops), and your target throughput. We take precise measurements from your samples to fabricate the track. If sending samples internationally is challenging, we can work from detailed engineering drawings with dimensions.

Q: Can you fabricate cap tracks for caps we haven't finalized yet?

A: We strongly recommend sending final or near-final cap samples. Cap tracks are machined to tight clearances (typically 1-2mm around the cap body), and even small dimensional changes in the cap design can affect track performance. If you are still in the packaging development phase, we can provide preliminary track design guidance and fabricate the final track once your cap design is locked.

Q: How many spare cap tracks should we order?

A: Most customers order one primary cap track plus a backup (identical) to eliminate downtime in the event of track damage. If you run multiple cap types on the same machine, order one track per cap geometry that differs significantly from others. Cap tracks are durable — they are fabricated from 3mm SS304 plate and typically last 3-5 years or longer with normal use.
