YM515 Positioning & Registration System — How Sensor-Guided Label Placement Works

The defining capability that separates the YM515 from standard round bottle labeling machines is its positioning and registration system. A conventional round bottle labeler applies labels at whatever rotational orientation the bottle happens to arrive in—sufficient for unbranded generic containers, but inadequate for products where label placement must align with specific bottle features. The YM515 detects a registration feature on each bottle (a printed mark, a molded seam, an embossed logo, a hole, or a notch), calculates the required rotation, and positions the bottle so the label lands at the exact target location specified in the product parameters.

Why Registered-Position Labeling Matters

Standard round-bottle labelers produce acceptable results when the bottle has no "front"—a plain cylindrical container where label orientation is irrelevant. But many products require orientation-specific labeling:

Application Registration Requirement Consequence of Misalignment
Shampoo bottle with molded front panel Label must center within recessed panel Label overlapping panel edge creates visibly unprofessional appearance
Wine bottle with embossed logo on shoulder Front label aligned to embossed feature Misalignment is immediately visible to the consumer
bottle with child-resistant cap Label orientation matches cap alignment tab Consumer confusion if label instructions don't match cap orientation
Round bottle with transparent window Label positioned opposite window, not covering it Window obscured by label defeats the packaging design purpose
Dual-labeled product (front and back) Labels positioned 180° apart with consistent orientation Unequal spacing between labels appears as a manufacturing defect
Product requiring inspection Label in fixed position for camera-based code verification Varying label position increases inspection system false-reject rate

How the YM515 Registration System Works
Step 1: Bottle Arrival and Feature Detection

As the conveyor carries a bottle into the labeling station, a photoelectric sensor or optional camera system scans for the registration feature. The sensor is mounted on an adjustable bracket that positions its detection zone at the height where the registration feature will pass. Common registration features include:

  • Printed mark: A small printed dot, line, or symbol on the bottle surface (added during bottle manufacturing or printing)
  • Molded seam: The vertical seam line where two mold halves meet during bottle blow-molding
  • Embossed/debossed feature: A raised logo, text, or decorative element molded into the bottle
  • Through-hole or notch: A physical discontinuity in the bottle profile (common on industrial containers)
  • Label seam on a previously applied label: For products receiving multiple labels in sequence
  • Cap orientation feature: The alignment tab on a child-resistant cap or the direction of a dispensing pump

The standard photoelectric sensor detects optical contrast (dark mark on light bottle, or light mark on dark bottle) and physical displacement (the sensor beam is interrupted by a raised feature or passes through a notch). For challenging detection scenarios, an optional vision system can identify low-contrast features, complex patterns, or features on transparent bottles.

Step 2: Angular Position Calculation

When the sensor detects the registration feature, the PLC records the bottle's angular position. Simultaneously, the PLC references the stored parameter data for this product, which defines:

  • The angular offset between the registration feature and the target label placement position
  • The bottle diameter (for calculating the rotation travel distance)
  • The label length (for determining label start and end points)
  • The rotation speed and acceleration profile

The PLC calculates the exact rotation angle and direction required to bring the target labeling surface into alignment with the label application point.

Step 3: Servo-Driven Bottle Rotation

A servo motor (RAYNEN) or stepper motor (KINCO) drives the bottle rotation mechanism. The motor controller receives the calculated rotation parameters from the PLC and executes the rotation with precise angular control. The bottle rotates only as much as needed—not a full revolution—minimizing cycle time.

Step 4: Stabilized Label Application

With the bottle held at the correct rotational position, the label feed motor advances the label. The peel plate separates the label from its liner. The application roller presses the label onto the bottle surface. Because the bottle was positioned before label contact, the label lands at the exact registered position specified in the parameters.

For tapered, conical, or thin-walled bottles, the optional pneumatic clamping mechanism engages during rotation and labeling to prevent the bottle from shifting or tilting.

FAQ
Product FAQ

Q: What if my bottles don't have a registration mark?

A: The YM515 can be configured to use almost any consistent bottle feature as a registration reference: a molded seam, an embossed logo, a cap orientation feature, or a decorative element. If your bottles truly have no usable feature, we can advise on adding a registration mark during bottle production—typically a small printed dot added to the bottle mold or a post-molding print station.

Q: Can the vision system handle transparent bottles?

A: Yes. The optional vision system uses backlighting and advanced image processing algorithms to detect features on transparent and translucent bottles. This is a common requirement for cosmetic and beverage applications using clear glass or PET bottles.

Q: What is the detection reliability at maximum speed?

A: The sensor system is specified to detect registration features reliably at the machine's maximum throughput of 60 bottles per minute. Detection reliability depends on the quality and consistency of the registration feature. We recommend testing with your actual bottles during the pre-shipment configuration process.

Q: Can I use different registration features for different products on the same machine?

A: Yes. Each product's parameter set includes its specific registration feature definition, sensor settings, and positioning parameters. The operator simply selects the product on the HMI, and all settings load automatically.

Company FAQ

Q: Can you help identify a suitable registration feature on my bottles?

A: Yes. Send samples of your bottles to our Shanghai engineering center. Our application engineers will evaluate potential registration features and recommend the optimal sensor configuration for reliable detection.

Q: Is on-site setup of the positioning system available?

A: Yes, in countries with local service presence (USA, Australia, Canada, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, South Korea). For other regions, our engineers provide remote video guidance for positioning system setup and calibration.
